Portales has excellent educational opportunities available to the public from the Portales Municipal Schools and Eastern New Mexico University. There are five elementary schools, a brand new junior high, an alternative education center, and Portales High School, all of whom have successfully met the “No Child Left Behind” testing criteria. Eastern New Mexico University is the third largest university in New Mexico with just under 4,000 students. ENMU offers 67 undergraduate degrees and 14 graduate degrees. Eastern also offers an extended learning program that includes non-credit classes for children and adults such as swimming, cheerleading, karate, ballet/tap, real estate principals, and gardening just to mention a few.
Excellent and comprehensive healthcare facilities are available in Portales. Roosevelt General Hospital is the latest addition. This modern, attractive facility is fully equipped with the most technologically advanced equipment available throughout the region and is staffed by the best-trained personnel. A new urgent care facility, Portales Medical Center, along with La Casa Health Clinic, offer full medical services daily. Large pools of medical doctors are continuously available through many other local medical centers and private practices.
