Press Release

Kick-Off Presentation: Friday, September 28
The kick off to this exciting process began at 7pm at City Hall. Code Studio and its team introduced the community to the charrette process. Their enthusiasm was reflected with the community’s anticipation of the outcome. We were ready to begin our Downtown Plan.

Hands On Design Session: Saturday, September 29
Community members joined Code Studio at 8:30am at the Old Portales medical building on the square for an intense session of drawing and discussing of ideas for the future downtown Portales with concentration on our arts and cultural assets. Teams broke up with facilitators to create our team visions. Each team then presented their ideas to the rest of the group. Amazing ideas and concepts flowed from the participants. Ironically, most teams had very similar opinions, concerns, and visions.

Technical Meetings: Monday, October 1
Technical meetings were held all day Monday with organizations such as the Department of Transportation and local service providers. Public Works, Community Development and Planning were in deep discussion with Code Studio on whether the ideas generated were feasible.

Pin Up Session: Monday, October 1
Monday evening held an open house between 6-8pm in which community members walked through the studio and saw first hand the work that Code Studio had produced thus far. Code Studio welcomed the feedback and talked with those in attendance gathering insight and opinions. They were definitely “Moving in the Right Direction”!

Work In Progress Presentation: Wednesday, October 3
Wednesday night was such an exciting event. The anticipation in the air hung thick as the room filled up with anxious community members. It was finally time to see the visuals of what Code Studio had been working so diligently on for the past five days. The ideas flowed in one smooth presentation with “Amens” being shouted from the crowd. Issues were addressed such as high density housing, mixed-use development, Courthouse square improvements, landscaping and the historic assets in our community such as the train depot. The presentation is included on this page for your convenience. This is an exciting time for the revitalization of the Portales Downtown.
