Sanitation and Solid Wastes

General Information

The Solid Waste department provides solid waste (garbage ) collection for the City of Portales. The City provides three different services. All collected solid waste is hauled to the Clovis Landfill. The City hauls approximately 10,000 tons annually to Clovis.

All residential customers, except for 801 housing have their solid waste pickup in 1.5 or three yard containers. These containers are picked up on a once a week basis. All 801 housing residents use polycarts and they are picked up on Thursdays. For any solid waste that won’t go in the dumpster, there are two options. For tree limbs, couches and large items that are placed beside the dumpster, the City will pick them up with a side boom truck. This truck runs the whole city on a route. It takes from four to six weeks to run the route. The other option is the Convenience Center (see below).

Portales Convenience Center
The Convenience Center is located at the Corner of Kaywood and Avon Streets. Customers are allowed to use the convenience Center four times per month. Customers must bring their bill to the center as proof that they are customers. The bill will be marked each time a customer uses the Center. The Convenience Center hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. And 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
