The 24 members of the Portales Fire Department provide a full range of fire and emergency medical services (EMS). In addition to the primary functions of fire suppression and emergency medical services the department is active in public education, prevention, and other civic projects. The fire department, which was established in 1909, protects the community and surrounding county with three pumpers, one pumper rescue, one ladder tower, one tanker, and a brush truck. All personnel are required to achieve firefighter II certification.

In addition, continuing education in all aspects of fire service is an integral part of each member’s life. Our community enjoys the insurance savings associated with having an Insurance Service Organization (ISO) rating of 4. It is rare to find a community of our size with such a low ISO rating and our department is proud of this achievement.

The ambulance service was combined with the fire department in 1974. Since that time the ambulance service has progressed from a snatch and run mortuary operation to a state of the art countywide medical system. By providing paramedic level services the department continues the long tradition of excellence in the field of EMS. While the members of the department as EMS providers are the cornerstones of the medical service provided to citizens of Portales and Roosevelt County the equipment is state of the art. The combination of caring professionals, modern technology, and a cooperative effort with the local medical community provides emergency medical care that exceeds expectations. Our EMS system has been recognized for excellence on many occasions.

The members of the Portales Fire Department are proud to provide all types of emergency management services to ensure the safety and security of all our citizens. Our highest goal is to save lives and property through prevention, fire suppression, and EMS services. As we accomplish this goal we hope to work with the rest of our community to make Portales a better place to live.
