Roosevelt County/City of Portales

Purpose/Functions of the Emergency Management Office

The purpose/functions of the Roosevelt County / City of Portales Emergency Management office is to mitigate, prepare, respond and recover from all man made or natural disasters. This is accomplished through a variety of means including:

Local Emergency Planning Committee—is a voluntary organization that has been established to meet the needs for emergency planning. Although originally established as a requirement of the Federal Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act, the Roosevelt County LEPC also contributes to the Emergency Planning, Preparedness, Response and Recovery from major disasters.

An emergency operations plan—Plan that utilizes local business, persons, resources to plan for potential disasters and task those plans in the event of a disaster.

An effective Emergency Operations Center—A local point established in preparation of a disaster where key personnel can assemble and make decisions based on the severity of the disaster.

Public Education and Awareness—A goal is to educate the citizens of Roosevelt County in preparedness, planning and recovery in the event of an emergency. Resources to achieve this goal are training seminars across the public, private and professional sectors, seasonal public announcements through media outlets, public forums and use of trained volunteers.
