Chief of Police
Jeffrey M. Gill
Chief Gill has been employed as Police Chief since 1993. Chief Gill has been serving continuously in Law Enforcement since 1978 and graduated from the New Mexico State Law Enforcement Academy in 1979. Prior to taking over the Chief’s position in Portales, he was the Director of the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy in Trinidad, Colorado. He has also served as a Patrolman in Jal, NM, Police Chief in Jemez Springs, NM, and a Patrol Sergeant with the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office.
Chief Gill has a bachelors degree in Police Science from New Mexico State University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of New Mexico. He also holds a Criminal Justice Administration Certificate from the University of New Mexico and has Post-graduate work in Educational Administration at Colorado State University.
Chief Gill is certified by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy and hold Executive Level Advanced Certification. He has also attended the FBI Southwest Command College along with numerous advanced training courses.
Deputy Chief/Captain
Scott Chambers
Captain Chambers acts as the Deputy Police Chief for the Department. He is also in charge of the Patrol Division and Animal Control.
Captain Chambers has been in Law Enforcement since 1978. He is certified by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy and holds an Executive level advanced certification. He is a graduate of the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA and the FBI’s Southwest Command College. He acts as the lead firearms instructor for the Department and holds many advanced training certificates.
Captain Chambers is an avid hunter and fisherman and takes great pride in having served with the United State Marine Corps.
Captain
Lonnie Berry
Captain Berry is in charge of the Investigation and Communication Divisions of the Department. He has been with the Portales Police Department since 1985. Captain Berry is certified by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy and holds advanced certification at the Command level.
Captain Berry has taken many advanced training classes. He has specialized in Child Abuse Investigation winning the Governors Award for Children Advocacy in 1994. He is the Past-President of the Board of Directors for the Oasis Children Advocacy Center in Clovis and serves on the Board of Directors for “The Bridge” Children’s Advocacy Center in Amarillo. Captain Berry has been a guest instructor at Eastern New Mexico University and Clovis Community College. He also serves as the department’s Public Information Officer.
